Q&A: How do I get on anti-anxiety medication?

Question by colleen0084: How do I get on anti-anxiety medication?
I feel bad b/c I just had a baby 4 months ago and I don’t always have energy for her b/c I just feel drained. The anxiety has put “knots” in my stomach for the last few months and they won’t go away. I know my anxiety/depression has been brought on because the father of my baby walked out on me and I feel really really low.

Should I just talk to my regular family doctor and ask for meds? What kind do you suggest?

Best answer:

Answer by meg420c
Don’t ask people on here what medication they suggest you take. That’s for a doctor to decide. Period. You could be suffering from postpartum depression along with some bad circumstances. Speak with your family doc and tell him/her what you’ve been feeling and experiencing. They cannot correctly diagnose you unless you disclose everything.

Living With Anxiety Disorders

There are a number of ways to treat an anxiety disorder as well there are also many different types of anxiety disorders. Anxiety treatments for the most part consist of medication which does not cure the anxiety but rather diminishes the effects of an anxiety attack. There is also counseling that can help a person learn to coup with and even sometimes cure an anxiety disorder.

There are many types of anxiety disorders and also many types of medications used as anxiety treatments. One of the most common types of medications used to treat anxiety disorders is antidepressants or also known as SSRI’s. SSRI’s or selective serotonin re uptake inhibitors work by altering the levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin. This neurotransmitter works to send signals between the brain cells for communication. Some of the more common SSRI’s are Zoloft, Prozac and Lexapro. This type of medication is used to treat not only depression but also as an anxiety treatment for Panic Disorders, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome and Social Phobias. This type of medication has fewer side effects than most other antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications.

Anti-anxiety medication is another treatment option for those looking for anxiety treatment. Benzodiazepines at high potency can help relief the symptoms of anxiety attacks. This medication has few side effects besides the obvious drowsiness which will occur. Patients using this medication will find that they have to keep upping the dose though to get the same relief. Because of this benzodiazepines are usually only prescribed for short periods.

Another anti-anxiety medication is Clonazepam, which helps those suffering from social phobias and general anxiety disorders. Lorazepam is helpful for those who suffer from panic disorders. Xanax is also common prescribed for those who suffer from both panic disorders and general anxiety disorders.

Patients taking medication as an anxiety treatment should never abruptly stop taking their medication. By abruptly stopping a medication could result in a relapse of symptoms. Medication should be slowly tampered off under the supervision of a medical physician.

Psychotherapy is also a treatment option that should be explored. Psychotherapy can be combined with medication or by itself. In psychotherapy you will be talking to a mental health professional that is trained in helping patients overcome their anxiety disorders. You will talk to this professional to discover what the root cause or triggers are for your anxiety attacks. They can help you deal with the symptoms of anxiety attacks and help you learn to better coupe with this disorder.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy is another type of psychotherapy that is very helpful for treating anxiety disorder. If fact, this is one way that a patient could actually be cured of the disorder. The patient is slowly exposed to the object or trigger of their anxiety disorder.

Many people suffer from some form of anxiety. There are several options available to help relieve them of the symptoms and lessen the degree of anxiety attacks. Through medication and the use of psychotherapy a patient can live an active life with little effects of the anxiety disorder

Anxiety disorder?????????????

Question by Willbob ScruffPants: Anxiety disorder?????????????
Im only 14 and i havent told anybody but i definitely have it.
When i was a few years younger i used to worry about every little thing and it wasnt my fault no matter how dumb the worries were. Now i’ve learned how to control that.
But now that im not overly stressed, (i still get stressed but not constantly) now i get panic attacks, vertigo, and TONS and TONS of symptoms. The thing is is noone notices when i have these.
I feel awkward in front of people i blush, i panic, and stuff and i cant talk sometimes.
But now im starting to get irregular heartbeats i think, its creepy. Like im only 14. I have only told my friend about the panic attacks and stuff cuz she experiences them too but my anxiety is much more severe, and i dont know what to do to make myself normal and to make my heart normal.
Please helppp i mean is there any advice other than go to the doctor? Im not saying i wont but for right now i dont wanna tell my mom and stuff, and IDK like is there anything i can do??
OH and one more thing i kinda have a fear of doctors especially if they have to like listen to my heartbeat cuz then i try to control my breathing and when i do that it just makes it worse so i try to think of something else but its horrible i cant stand it ughh

Q&A: Would you say I am getting anxiety attacks?

Question by Amanda C: Would you say I am getting anxiety attacks?
Just about everyday I get nauseous/hot flashes/heart palpitations/and body trembles.
I usually get like that when I am overwhelmed with work or tasks. I have a heart murmur and it acts up ’cause of stress. But could I have a problem with anxiety? Is it anxiety attacks I am experiencing? I really have no idea. Thank you ahead of time.

I’ve had panic attacks for about two years now and that’s exactly what happens to me. If they are getting in the way of your every day living, go to the doctor and talk about paxil or other antidepressants that are used for panic attacks. I myself don’t use any drugs for them because part of my problem is that I’m a severe hypochondriac and am afraid to take medications but they have helped my cousin greatly.
