Q&A: do you have to go to therapy if you want to take anxiety medication?

Question by Nameless: do you have to go to therapy if you want to take anxiety medication?
i’ve seen a therapist previously. at this point in my life though i don’t think that would be helpful (plus it’s really expensive). are you allowed just to take medication? can your regular medical doctor prescribe it for you or do you need to speak specifically with a psychiatrist?

Your normal GP will be able to prescribe anxiety pills if you need them. There is no need to go to a psychiatrist.

A nighttime pain reliever should be fine. If it makes you sleepy, your body needs to sleep. You can take half of a dose in the mornings if you want to, but if you are tired, rest, watch TV, or take a walk for a few minutes.

Anxiety Attack Medication: Klonopin? The Wonder Drug

If you are suffering from anxiety or panic attacks, then you would surely be familiar with terms such as Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), Benzodiazepines, Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), and Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). Medications from these groups are very commonly used for the treatment of anxiety attacks. The doctor often decides on the best medication for the patient and may also prescribe combinations of medications from different groups. It is important that all the patients read about the medications for anxiety attacks for a better understanding for the medications.

A very good anxiety attack medication that is very popular among the doctors is Klonopin. The generic name of this medication is Clonazepam. Klonopin belongs the Benzodiazepine family and like its other members; it also enhances the effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain.

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a neurotransmitter which inhibits brain activity. Experts believe that excessive activity in the brain is one of the causes of anxiety or panic attacks. If these excessive activities of the brain are controlled, the person becomes normal.

In addition to anxiety and panic disorders, Klonopin is often prescribed by the doctors for the treatment of seizures. After prescribing Klonopin, the doctors may or may not tell you about the details of the medication. If the doctor is willing to tell you more about Klonopin, then you must listen to the information very carefully. If the doctor does not have the time to give you additional information related to Klonopin, then you can log on to the Internet and get all the information you need related to the Klonopin.

Klonopin is widely used for the treatment for anxiety attacks. This medication is usually available in two forms—tablets and disintegrating tablets. Storage of Klonopin is very important and must be kept at room temperature at all times. If this medication is kept in extreme temperatures, the medications will lost its efficacy and may not be fit for consumption. Treating panic disorder when you are pregnant can be very difficult because most of the prescription drugs are harmful to the growing fetus. So, if you are pregnant, Klonopin may not be prescribed by the doctor.

If you get pregnant during any kind of anxiety attack medication treatment, then you need to call up your doctor and inform him or her immediately. If you are breastfeeding, then you need to refrain from taking Klonopin as this medication may be secreted in the breast milk. Common side effects of Klonopin are as follows:

Depression
Constipation
Nervousness
Breathing problems
Hives
Hypotension
Seizures

In addition to the above mentioned side effects, patients have also complained of some allergic reactions. If you observe any allergic reactions, then you must discontinue Klonopin immediately and talk to your doctor. Your doctor may either lower the dosage strength of Klonopin or just change the medication. Like all other benzodiazepine drugs, Klonopin can also be very addictive and there are known cases of drug abuse. Most drug abusers use Klonopin in conjunction with alcohol or other narcotic drugs.

Due to the drug abuse, the doctors may ask you if you have a history of drug abuse before the treatment for anxiety attacks. If you have a history of drug abuse, then the doctor may prescribe non-habit forming medications, which are completely safe even after an overdose. Drug abuse of Klonopin may even lead to comas and in some severe cases it may even cause death in most sever cases. Constant monitoring of this drug is very important and this responsibility is often taken by someone who is very close to the patient.

When some people get addicted to benzodiazepine drugs such as Klonopin, they get into a confused state and they don’t know what to do to stop the addiction. When cases get out of hand, it is best to sign into a Klonopin Rehab center. The Klonopin Rehab center is the best place to start with if you want to get rid of the addiction of benzodiazepine drugs. You may need a lot of support from your relatives, friends and doctors during the rehab process. If you get good and correct guidance, you will definitely come out of the drug addiction.

How do I go about getting anti depressants and anxiety medication?

Question by cuteness: How do I go about getting anti depressants and anxiety medication?
do I have to go to a therapist or just a regular doctor? or what?
what if I dont have a regular doctor>

Best answer:

Answer by emtd65
You can begin with your regular doctor. He/she may prescribe them for you and they should suggest you see a therapist as well. These medications are not a cure but a tool. Once they are discontinued your symptoms will return. It is best to learn why you are feeling this way and how best to deal with it – which is where a therapist comes in.
