Can I qualify for SSI after 10 years of anxiety, panic attacks, agoraphobia & depression (since I was 14)?

Question by J: Can I qualify for SSI after 10 years of anxiety, panic attacks, agoraphobia & depression (since I was 14)?
I am 24 now. When I was 14 (year 2000) I was admitted to a mental institution for suicide attempts/feelings, severe depression, anxiety & panic attacks. I could not finish high school due to this.

Since then I have been treated off and on for the same things, as well as agoraphobia and PTSD (from childhood abuse). I still have the constant general anxiety and panic attacks, some agoraphobia, and the depression and suicidal feelings are intermittent. I am currently being treatment, but I do not have records of 10 years of constant treatment (only here and there), though I have also been on many medications.

IMPORTANT: I have only worked 4 days in my entire life, I am not sure how this affects my eligibility for SSI. I quit one job after 3 days and the other after 1 day due to panic attacks. I don’t feel I am capable of working because I can’t even leave my house or go to town without my boyfriend, who has been supporting me financially the past 8 years.

I can not drive and do not have a driver’s license. When I am outside my home I spontaneously panic and feel like I must escape and get back to my home, and I have physical pain and symptoms caused by this panic.

I just wanted someone with experience to give me their honest opinion about my chances and if I should pursue it even to the judge/lawyer stage if I am denied. Thank you.
Also would like to add that in addition to documented psychological treatment and diagnoses I have ER records of self-mutilation and panic attacks.
@Kate. Thank you for all your advice. I have seen and am currently seeing a therapist in addition to a psychiatrist, sorry if I didn’t make that clear.

I’m really sorry about your conditions, but most people applying for SS only get it when they reach age of retirement or are dead (in which case, their SS money goes to their family).

I can’t be sure, though. Look it up on their website.

panic attacks? bi-polar?

Question by Gus: panic attacks? bi-polar?
I am a 21 year old male who has suffered from what can best be described as panic atacks since I was 8 or 9. They come on fast for no aparant reason peaking within minutes and usually lasting around 15 – 30 min. During this time I feel anxious, paranoid, my thoughts race and i often end up pacing. It sounds like anyone talking to me is talkking very fast and are angry, my own thoughts also sound fast and angry at myself but I do not know why (this is very upsetting and I often feel depressed for several days after). During severe attacks I feel a disconection with by body, I could probably move if I tried but end up being perfectly still staring off because it feels like I have no body. I also having a feeling of unreality, its hard to describe but the world around me just doesn’t feel real, like I am on some strong mind altering drug.

They happen maybe once every three weeks, sometimes though I may go months without having one but other times I may have several in one week. They don’t always contain all the symptoms I have desribed but always the racing angry thoughts and if I cannot get control of them the unreality.
They don’t generally impair my life as they are not extremely common and are not triggered by any particular event. They can be very severe sometimes though and leave me messed up for days as stated.

I have heard panic attacks are sometimes linked to bi-polar. Bi-polar runs in my fathers family. I have been told by people that know me well that they think I am bi-polar because I am often in extremely good moods or grumpy/apathetic/depressed. Personally I dont think this good or bad moods are to a level to classify me as bi-polar, everyone gets upset or excited sometimes.

Anyway what are your thoughts? Anyone have similar experiances? Any suggestions for treatment, (generally I dont think its worth it but the last 3 weeks have been pretty terrible, I have had simi-panic attacks almost every day and full blown ones at least once or twice a week).

I have panic attacks with agoraphobia and know exactly what you are talking about. not being able to move, racing thoughts, heart racing, and not feeling like you’re in your body. I am also bipolar. You have not mentioned anything about being SAD or hyper so I agree with you, perhaps you are not bipolar. On the other hand since you have a history of mental illness in your family, I suggest seeing a psychiatrist to rule out any possibilities or doubts. In regards to my panic attacks I was prescribed Klonopin to take on a as needed basis. Maybe you can get a med to help your symptoms.

www.HereHelpYou.com Treatment For Panic disorders Isn’t it great to locate a treatment for panic disorders that can permanently “cure” your own condition? Defeating panic attacks permanently is an extremely tricky task, and everyone encountering the condition have differing levels or success (or failure). The 1st step towards “curing” panic attack would be to gradually get off drugs. Medication tolerance immediately one thinks of. Remedy gradually becomes less and also less effective and increasingly more expensive. Unconscious conditions require psychological/cognitive remedy. Your next step towards curing your social anxiety disorder, nevertheless, is not research each treatment method right until finding something that operates. You are inclined to think that your condition might be worse since a theoretically “effective” treatment didn’t meet your needs exactly. More Information, Please Visit : www.HereHelpYou.com

Panic attacks only at night?

Question by Derek: Panic attacks only at night?
Within the past 2 weeks I have been having what I can only guess are panic attacks at night. I lay down and get comfortable. As soon as I start to relax and get sleepy, a tingle starts to overwhelm my body. My heart starts pounding and it feels like I am gonna choke on my breath. I jump out of bed because I think I am going to stop breathing. I lay back in bed and feel my stomach churning, I am sweating, and my lips tingle. It feel exactly like the moment before you are going to throw up but you never do. . .only with a pounding heart and a short of breath. It comes in waves. As of late, I have been waking up in the middle of one of these episodes. I have always dealt with depression and started getting treatment for it last week (low dose of prozac). Do these episodes sound like panic attacks or could this be a heart issue? I only seems to get them at night. Except when I don’t sleep, then the feeling sort of bleeds into the day time. I am 28 years old and in good shape.

Sounds like panic attacks. I suffer from them severely as well. When I had my first panic attack I literally thought I was dying. I thought I was having a heart attack. I went to the hospital, they did EKG on me, etc. My heart was beating 190 beats a minute. They diagnosed me with panic attacks. They are the worst thing in the world to experience…. I have them often and have to take xanex to calm me down. I have been having a lot lately and I am thinking of contacting my doctor. I have suffered from bipolar depression and manic disorder for years. I take a lot of medicine. I understand how you feel and you are NOT alone. What I do now is recognize what is happening and work through it. It goes away eventually, but is tough to endure. I can sympathize with you. No one understands unless you have been there.

Zofran to treat nausea/vomiting/diarrhea caused by panic attacks?

Question by K.E.: Zofran to treat nausea/vomiting/diarrhea caused by panic attacks?
I have been struggling with panic attacks since I was 5 years old. I have had virtually every treatment under the sun. I am in cognitive behavioral therapy and it is helping, but one thing has not changed – any time I become anxious about something or have a panic attack, my stomach goes on revolt against me. I have severe bouts of intestinal cramping and diarrhea, as well as nausea and vomiting, whenever I have a panic attack. I have tried Xanax but while it does decrease my overall anxiety, it does very little for my distressing GI symptoms.

I was prescribed Levsin to help with the intestinal cramping and diarrhea (doctors believe I have IBS), and I was also given a script for Zofran, an anti-emetic usually used in chemo or radiation patients. They said the anti-nausea effects of the medication and the serotonin-influencing properties of the drug might help with my panic attack related stomach problems

Does anyone have any experience with using Zofran to treat anxiety-related gastrointestinal issues? This has been going on for me for years and I’m really at the end of my rope right about now! Any suggestions you can give are welcome and highly appreciated. Thank you!

It must be a living hell for you. I hope you have seen a GI doctor to get help with your symptoms. There must be stronger medications especially designed for your problem, an antiemetic. Your problem seems hard to treat because you’ve had it for so long. Your body seems to have gotten use to responding in this way. Please keep us informed about how you are doing. I hope you will find a doctor that will be able to help you. Good Luck.

Discover Different Panic Attack Treatment Options

Because of poor eating habits and busy lifestyles, anxiety is a very wide spread thing nowadays. A lot of people nowadays have struggled with anxiety and panic attacks for many years and have tried a lot of various methods in order to deal with it or possible treat their panic attacks. If you are currently looking for the best panic attack treatment, one thing that you should know is that the adrenal glands are very crucial in better understanding the nature of anxiety. The adrenal glands are the very organs in our body that are responsible for coping up with stress to the body in whatever form it takes. This could imply both physical and mental stress.

In order to help you overcome anxiety, you will have to boost the overall health of your adrenal glands.

Anxiety is almost always a manifestation of an adrenal overload or fatigue. As a first approach to panic attack treatment, you will need to support your adrenal glands by taking in the following supplements:
Panthothenic acid
Vitamin B100 Complex
Vitamin C
Vitamin E with tocopherols
Adrenal glandular
Liquid trace minerals
Magnesium citrate

You may also opt to try two of these good herbs to help boost the health of your adrenal glands nd provide you with an immediate relief:

Winter Cherry – is a panic attack treatment which has been shown to possess a sedating impact on the body and aids in restoring the digestive and nervous system. Winter cherry is also used to help in getting good night sleep when you are feeling restless.
Siberian ginseng – is also used traditionally to help stimulate and nourish the adrenal glands and alleviate alertness of the mind. This herb is recommended to be taken in the morning.

There are also some patients who have observed that they have benefitted from adding salt to their diet. While salt is perceived as something that is not good for the body, it could probably bring some benefits if your adrenal glands are not functioning very well and that you may have sodium deficiency because there is too little aldosterone production in your body. Celtic salt or sea salt are preferred over table salt as they provide up to 80 other essential minerals.

Low blood sugar or otherwise known as hypoglycemia is also one of the possible outcomes of adrenal fatigue. Getting rid of all sugars from the foods that you eat will help greatly as a form of panic attack treatment. When eating snacks, make sure to eat only healthy foods which have an equal amount of fats, proteins and complex carbohydrates. In addition to this, getting rid or lessening the amount of coffee that you drink will also do wonders as it stimulates the adrenals and can cause aggravation of stress. For the same reason, also keep from eating chocolates.

You should be aware that supporting and promoting the overall health of your adrenal glands with the above stated supplement, herbs and diets will help you to stop your panic attacks entirely. This will also help you improve your anxiety tremendously. Try these treatments and enjoy calmness and an improved quality of life.

Q&A: Why panic attacks and depression?

Question by Alex: Why panic attacks and depression?
I have panic attacks every once in a while, and my parents dont know yet but I was planning on telling them. Whenever I get in front of my class to present something I feel one building up but I always manage to not completely freak out. and everyone says I should get a doctor’s note for it so I wont have to present.

The problem is though, a lot of doctors think panic attacks come with depression. Im not depressed! i just have panic attacks. why do doctors give medicine thats for depression? Thats not going to help me with my panic attacks since I dont have depression. I mean if I had both that would be another story but i dont. Please someone give me an answer that actually might help my panick attacks. Oh and Im under eighteen so it cant be adult medication or treatment

personally, you may be having anxiety attacks and not panic attacks. this can also happen when you are nervous, sad, unhappy, or anything like that. panic attacks are more severe than anxiety attacks.
